Weather Safe : Turn Around Don’t Drown, Flash Flood

Flash Flood: “ is a rapid flooding of geomorphic low-lying areas: washes, riversdry lakes and basins. It may be caused by heavy rain associated with a severe thunderstormhurricanetropical storm, or melt water from ice or snow flowing over ice sheets or snowfields.” -Wikipedia

Flash flooding usually happens suddenly and at times it can be without warning. But does that mean that we can not be safe in the event a flash flood occurs? Actually if we know what to do during a flash flood in certain situation, harm and loss of life can be avoided. Lets take a closer look at how.

Flash Flood Safety: Cars and other moving Vehicles

1. One rule and probably the most important one is “Turn Around Dont Drown”. At times during flash flooding the roads end up flooded. At times people attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Bad Idea. Just a foot of water alone could cause your car to float and two feet could sweep it away. Putting you (and others) in further danger. The best idea in such a circumstance is to turn around and find another way, or if there is no other way, simply stay put or move to higher ground. This would keep you safe on the road.

2. Have a weather ready kit. This may help you in case you are stranded somewhere or if you do end up floating from not turning around. It should include a life vest and flashlight as these will likely be necessary safety equipment for such a scenario.

Flash Flood Safety: At Home and Business

We all can remember new Orleans when Hurricane Katrina Rolled through. What does that have to do with anything. Well there was previous warning that flash flooding would likely occur. That was not heeded. When the leaveys failed it could be considered a flash flood. Many people were trapped for days, and sewer and pluming and electrical systems were down for an extended period of time. Whats the point? Well in all situations flash flooding is not always warened and certainly usually does not happen to that extent. But when FLASH FLOOD WATCHES are issued and we live in low lying areas we should take heed and have in mind our disaster preparedness plans. When FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS are issued we should take immediate action because if we wait around it may be too late. Evacuating may be necessary, especially depending on what area you live in.

These are just a few thoughts about how to stay safe during situations that flash flooding occurs. Be Weather Safe Not sorry.
