Storm Update: Blizzard Warnings For Parts Of Virginia ; 2003 Snowstorm Smilarities

Flashback to January 16-17th 2003 Surprise Snowstorm

First big snowstorm of the season has arrived for the mid-Atlantic. Not like most expected it to though as the areas in the southern areas of it will get the most snow. About a foot to a foot and a half of snow looks to fall in southeastern areas of Virginia to Virginia beach. However for some reason this storm reminds me a little bit of a storm that came through in January of 2003. Every model had the storm providing flurries for dc/Baltimore and Philadelphia but the storm stayed close enough to the coast to bring a nice 2-5″ snowfall in the DC/Baltimore/Philly area. Actually this storm is actually modeled to be stronger than that one was. This is something i have been monitoring for days now.

Slowly but surely the models are inching back to the very same scenario it seems like. Snowfall gradients will be tight however. Don’t be surprised if areas not too far west of 95 see an inch or so out of this storm especially with higher snowfall ratios. What is really alarming is that the setup is literally almost Identical as it was then. (see image bellow) A weak area of low pressure over the great lakes and the storm staying south with a massive frigid cold high pressure behind it in almost all the same positions. Something that definitely has to be monitored!

My Forecast: I think I-95 areas will see the storm more than some models are indicating. Everything will stick.

DC- 2-4″ Snow

Baltimore 1-3″ Snow

Richmond 6-10″ Snow

Virginia Beach 8-16″ Snow

Ocean City MD- 4-8″ Snow

Philly 1-2″ Snow

Atlantic City 4-8″ Snow

Would you be surprised if this storm was an over performer in Philadelphia regions?
