Often Times we get into the mold of wondering how draft pick and Free agents will make the roster who gets cut and who will remain on the team, here is my first crack at what the 53 man roster will look like when its all settled and done with. There are 51 Currently on this roster.
Quaterback (3)- 1. Dak Presscott 2.Kellen Moore 3. Cooper Rush*
With the emergence of Dak Presscott last season, The quaterback at # 1 appears set. The backup quaterback is a favorite of the offensive coordinator and while he does have a weak arm, he does have what it takes to move the ball up and down the field. Cooper Rush is the wild card as I can see the cowboys keeping 3 QB’s in order to groom him to be the backup quaterback last year. He may end up on the practice squad if the numbers are crunched.
Running Back (4)- 1. Elliot 2.Mcfadden 3. Morris 4.Keith Smith (fullback)
This does not really need an explanation. Morris may be replaced if they find an option at running back similar to the role lance dunbar had last year but for right now this is how my running back Fullback rotation pans out.
Wide Reciver (5)- 1. Bryant 2. Williams 3.Beasley 4. Noah Brown (R) 5. Ryan Switzer (R)
Here is where the bigger changes come in. Your top three are set. But the two draft picks of Noah Brown and Ryan Switzer may push out some under achieving veterans such as Brice Butler and Lucky Whitehead. Noah Brown has a simlar playing style to dez bryant and is a good run blocker. Ryan Switzer may turn out to be a more explosive Cole Beasley and and excellent returner. Effectively replacing Lucky Whiteheads role who has failed to really impress.
Tight End (4)- 1.Witten 2.Hannah 3.Swame 4.Rico Gathers
Hannah is coming off of major surgery so he is a wild card and with the progress of Rico Gathers he may jump up the depth chart. Really this position doesn’t matter all that much to project playing time beacause its not like witten is coming off the feild.
Offensive Line (9)- Tyron Smith (LT) – Chaz Green (LG) -Travis Fredrick (C) – Zack Martin (RG) – La’el Collins (RT) – Jonathan Cooper, -Bell
The best offensive line in football lost two major pieces in Ronald Leary (Signed by Broncos) and Doug Free (retirement) but the cowboys are prepared for the move. In the end the only tow peices that may move around is chaz green and la-el collins as the coaches may swap there positions. Chaz Green is listed as a Tackle but I see him more of a guard where he can use his strength. He played at guard some in OTA’s. I am hoping to be surprised but emmitt cleary and Jonathan Cooper do not invoke confidence if they start at Right guard. So right now in some order I think this is your starting 5.
Corner-back (6)- 1. Anthony Brown 2. Chedobe Awozie 3.Orlando Scanrick 4. Jordan Lewis 5. White
Here is where the big changes come in on the defense. While there was a mass exodus of secondary players. Id be hard pressed to say that they were world beaters. But they played well in 2016 nonetheless. Right now I see Anthony Brown an impressive second year player taking over as a starter and second round pick Chedobe awozie opposite of him, Orlando scanrdick may be traded or keep his job in the slot, regardless as much as the NFL goes 3 & 4 wide Lewis and Scandricks position seem secure. Marquez White has the traits of a good player and did not allow a touchdown pass in his last season. I could see him make the 53 man roster for depth purposes. Nolan Carroll is not up here right now, because Im waiting on the leauge to render a ruling on him. If hes hit with a suspension and the younger players outplay him Dallas may just select to go with youth.
Safety(4)- 1.Byron Jones (SS) 2. Xavier Woods(FS) 3. Jeff Heath (FS) 4. Ryan Fraizer (SS)
Byron Jones typically plays center feild as a free safety and does a pretty good Job at it. The only flaw he has is that he does not create many turnovers. His best place is covering tight ends in routes. Byron is good enough to make the switch as it would also put him in position to play closer to the line of scrimmage. Woods was a standout at lousiana tech and more importantly creates turnovers. (9 interceptions in last two season at LT) I believe he will take over the starting job sometime in training camp but will rotate with Jeff Heath. Heath may not win the job outright because coachs may want him fresh on special teams. Fraiszer has an opportunity to play a bigger role. The question is will he seze the opprotunity?
Defensive Tackle(4) – 1. Tyrone Crawford (3 Tech) 2. Maliek Collins (1-Tech) 3. Stephen Pea 4. Cedric Thortan
Tyrone Crawford played at left defensive end out of necessity in 2016 and proved to be a stout run defender from the position. He will move back to his natural position of the 3 tech this year and I belive Maliek Collins is stout enough to play the run and offer more pass rush than what Terrell Mcclain did last season. Stephen pea has been a shell of himself since he left rod marinelli in chicago. He is a pass rushing 1 technique, Maybe rod marinelli can get him back to his once dominant form. Cedrick Thortan was a big free agent pickup last season. Lets hope he plays better this year than he did last. To me this unit will be even more stout than last season.
Defensive End(6)- 1. Demarcus Lawrence (LE) 2.Taco Charlton (RE) 3. Damonte Moore 4. David Irving 5.Chales Tapper 6.Benson Mayowa
They can’t get to the Quaterback! All Kinds of Time! We got use to those statements the first 8 weeks of the cowboys season. But silently near the end of the season no team rushed the passer better than the cowboys. David Irving will be serving a 4 game suspension and Damonte Moore is a wild card. But if Mayowa can play like he did at the end of last season and Chales Tapper lives up to his potential this could be a quite potent group. Lawrence played through injury and suspenstion last year. I can see him moving to his natural position as a left end this season and regain his 2015 form (8 sacks) Taco Charlton will likely start off slow but end well. Whatever the case, this positions seems to be younger and more hungry than in previous years.
Linebacker (6)- Sean Lee Jaylon Smith Wilson Mark Nzacha Anthony Hitchens
The Linebacker corps may be the most stable on the defense as Sean Lee when healthy is a top 3 linebacker in the NFL. Jaylon Smith before his injury was going to be a top 5 pick in the NFL draft. If he can come back from his injury and play at the same leavel as he did in college they will have a trumendous 1-2 puch at linebacker and wilson and Hitchens are no slouches either, Kyle wilber and Mark Nzatcha are both solid players.
Kickers(1)- Dan Baily
Why would you change the 2nd most accurate kicker in NFL history? If its not broke dont try to fix it.
Punter(1)- Chris Jones
If it isnt broke why fix it? Plus he a tremendous holder for bailey. And is an athletic punter giving you a good option for a trick play on special teams (See eagles game in 2016). Also has become very good at pinning players to the sideline with a directional kick
Long Snapper (1)- LP Lacodor
Been one of the most consistent players the last decade.
